Damn. I am not a G/L expert, but I do at least have a clue. Those comments are brutal!
I’m in HR and help with payroll and I’m always surprised how much I have to explain to accounting/finance about payroll taxes and calculations! Eta… ouch they slam HR pros too….
Saw that post earlier today and I really irked me. I have been on both sides and if I only had half the picture it would be difficult to answer such vague questions. I do agree that the Payroll Manager should understand both sides and be able to respond but I can’t tell you how many times I have had to explain payroll to CAs and the Partners at my firm.
I used to convert accounting systems for companies and the payroll department was always the worst part, here’s the standard layout:
1. Payroll gets absolutely no transparency to the accounting parts because accounting wants to have control, then they wonder why payroll doesn’t do anything but push exactly the buttons they were told decades ago.
2. Then accounting wonders why their tax liability accounts are all out of whack, and blame payroll, who are perfectly in balance on their spreadsheets and reports, and perfectly match all the agencies they report to.
3. Payroll fires back and says they’ve been doing it the same way they were last told to, and in fact, they don’t even have the choice to do it a different way, literally put numbers in and push button… come to find out, they’ve changed systems/accounts/methods and it’s been years since anyone last told payroll.
4. It’s now my job as a consultant to fix it for them, while charging a notable hourly fee.
Hey guys, turns out your balance sheet hasn’t balanced since the Bush administration, and your general ledger hasn’t match your subledgers since the other Bush administration. What in the hell have you been putting on your tax returns?
The job was 10% planning, 15% actual configuration and setup, 15% therapy, and 60% unfucking their basic communications and bookkeeping mess.
Good money. Shit life balance. Would recommend if you’re in debt and have no friends.
I used to get so irritated when accounting came to me upset that something changed. Come to find out, they made the change and didn’t test it first. But because it was payroll they expected me to know why it didn’t work. Even though I don’t have visibility to the GL.
Ouch that thread hurts me as a payroll professional with an accounting degree but gives me hope i can find a job lol
If someone has been at their job for 30 years and does not know how to explain why an account that they are the only one that hits that account is out then they have a problem.
Accounting has no idea why payroll does things, they are there to make sure the books balance. Any payroll person that balks at that is a problem themselves. If the books don’t balance then either the payroll department over withheld from an employee or under withheld. Either way it needs to be figured out.
