Professional Development options BESIDES CPP? AKA Im feeling a bit stuck
I work for a fast-growing non-profit organization backed by government funds.
We have grown from 150 to 350 employees in the last 4 years, and have changed payroll providers during that time, going from separate HR and time/manpower software to combined software (Paylocity).
Now that the FFCRA is coming to a close, we are onboard with Paylocity and I have put systems in place for ongoing training and support, I feel like I have been stuck with the professional gains that the experience can bring.
(I’ve been with the company for more than 6 years) I need to find out what options I have for professional development other than CPP.
I have limitations that prevent me from putting in the time and effort required to earn my CPP until possibly next summer, but my company actively encourages professional development and really wants to know how you can support me now.
We have a very extensive HR team so expanding HR capabilities is not something I have considered as all the ‘bases’ (benefits, onboarding, compliance, etc.) are pretty much covered. I LOVE the company and the benefits are incredible.

You could pursue the APA Payroll Management Learning path. They are courses that help you at a higher level, but also assist with guiding you toward the CPP without the commitment.
Lean Six Sigma, it’s a project management program that focuses on efficiency and reduction of waste.
What are some areas of weakness in the department? Can you focus on those to become a SME, or help another department member become the SME? Coaching someone to become better can also help you by getting a different perspective. New eyes ask lots of why’s. Dont become the “because we have always done it that way” mentality.
Great question! I’m in a similar situation, so I decided on CPP. But other ideas are appreciated too.
