  1. This reminds me when I had a coworker pull me aside in the last week of December in 2013.

    She asked my help to somehow fix a -$33k YTD California state income tax. To this day, I have never seen a preview W-2 with a negative state income tax before or after that. If she wasn’t such a memorable pain in the ass, I would’ve thought I imagined it in a payroll horror nightmare. Still don’t understand how she was able to get a negative state income tax. Sorcery! 💫

  2. curious from an HR standpoint what they are trying to refund/correct? and why it would go negative? If it was something in the previous tax year, that’s a whole ‘nother ballgame for most qualified plans (and can get into qualification issues especially if under an ERISA retirement plan)
